In many ways, road-rallying is the original form of organized motorsports competition. Today, it is conducted on roads open to the public (unlike today’s stage rallying) and under normal rules of the road.

Registration is open for An Afternoon Wasted in Tribute to Tom Lehrer, a simple course-following Gimmick (GTA) sign hunt inspired by the works of legendary satirical singer/songwriter Tom Lehrer, who passed away in July. Join us and enjoy a Sunday afternoon tour of Jefferson County’s rural roads while seeking to answer questions along the route based on the signs you see.

Start: Mastodon State Historic Site, 1050 Charles J Becker Dr, Imperial, MO 63052.

Size of the field: We are limiting the field to 20 teams. While each team must include a driver and navigator, your team is welcome to include as many participants as can safely be carried in the car (which is determined by the number of seat belts).

Registration: Registration available at MotorsportReg.com (https://msreg.com/stlnov2025rally). Entries are on a first-come basis. Online registration closes Friday, Nov. 21, at 11:59 p.m.

Nov. 23 check-in: 12:30 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. at Mastodon State Historic Site.

Safety meeting: 1:15 p.m.

First car departs the start: 1:31 p.m. Competitors will have three hours to complete the course and turn in their answer sheets.

What you need: a car, a driver and navigator, a clipboard, pencils and paper.

Entry fee: $20.00 per team for SCCA teams, $35.00 per team for non-member teams. An SCCA team is defined as a team in which at least one participant is an SCCA member. The $35.00 entry fee for a nonmember team includes an SCCA Weekend Membership for the team’s “primary entrant,” i.e., the member who will pay the entry fee. The other member(s) of a non-SCCA team will receive a free SCCA Trial Membership, as will non-member participant(s) of an SCCA team.

About Mastodon State Historic Site: Mastodon State Historic Site is the location of the Kimmswick Bone Bed, where scientists discovered the first solid evidence of the coexistence of humans and the American mastodon in eastern North America. Visitors can enjoy learning about the discovery and prehistoric Missouri at the museum, which features an interpretive video, ancient artifacts and fossils, and a mastodon skeleton replica. The museum is open noon to 4 p.m. on November 23; entry is free for visitors 12 and under, and $4/person for ages 13 and up. About Tom Lehrer: Tom Lehrer (1928–2025) was an American singer/songwriter, satirist, and professor of mathematics and musical theatre. His work as a musician was primarily in the 1950s and 60s, commonly featuring dark, political or otherwise unexpected comedic lyrics set to a catchy tune. Lehrer’s most known song is perhaps 1959’s “The Elements,” which features all 102 then-known periodic elements set to the tune of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Major-General’s Song” from The Pirates of Penzance. It is similar to this year’s Tulips & Other Spring Flowers and 2023’s Tulips by Night and Tulips Redux Road Rallies. We have designed the event with the new/occasional rally team in mind. Expect paved Madison County, Ill., roads, easy-to-follow tulip diagrams for route instructions, and checkpoint locations identified by official mileages and arrival times. Vitale’s Hideaway has been a stop at Route 66 and the Worden Y since Route 66 was established in the 1920s. A popular nightspot and dance hall in the 1930s, today it serves as a neighborhood bar and grill, one that recently was featured on the TV reality show Bar Rescue. The app will report your arrival time and leg score to your cellphone or tablet moments after you pass each GPS checkpoint location. About Mastodon State Historic Site: Mastodon State Historic Site is the location of the Kimmswick Bone Bed, where scientists discovered the first solid evidence of the coexistence of humans and the American mastodon in eastern North America. About RoadRally

The St. Louis Region maintains a regular schedule of local RoadRally events and from time to time offers also Divisional and National weekends that attract SCCA rally teams from around the country. Our “legacy” event is the Daniel Boone National Rally, which has been part of the Region’s portfolio since the late 1950s. Since 1998, we have four times hosted the United States RoadRally Challenge, the premier event on SCCA RoadRally’s annual National Championship calendar.

Rally School 2024

On the Region level, this year we are hosting a five-event Rally School series. Designed to impart the basics of road-rallying to a new generation—or to refresh your skills if you’re familiar with the sport, each event will focus on a specific aspect of road-rallying and help you gain a better understanding of the sport.

Each rally will begin and end at Sunset Overlook on Bluff Road in Columbia, Ill. (www.sunsetoverlook.com). Expect a mid-afternoon check-in, a rally school with a Q&A, and a 4 p.m. start. Each rally will run approximately two hours.

What is RoadRally?

RoadRally or simply road rally at its most basic level is an excursion, a cruise, or a scenic drive with a purpose. It is a chance to exercise your favorite set of wheels and enjoy a day with a colleague, a friend, a sibling, a son or daughter, a spouse, or other family member. It also is an entertaining, fun, inexpensive form of motorsport that can offer a doorway to other motorsports activities.

What Do I Need?

A driver and navigator and a car (or truck or SUV, etc.) that is registered properly and on the road legally, is insured, and meets required national safety standards. You also may need, depending on the event, a clipboard, a calculator, a cell phone, a compass (on rare occasions), paper, and pencils or pens for writing. For an event run at night, add interior lighting—i.e., a map light, flashlight, or other device—to read your route instructions. (Also, for night rallies, driving lights may make your car look cool and more like a rally car, but you likely won’t need them, because your high-beam headlights will work just fine.)

SCCA rules mandate that a rally team must be composed of two people, i.e., a driver and navigator (or co-driver). Some local events may allow more than two people in a vehicle, with the stipulation that the number of persons in the vehicle not exceed the number of safety belts available. (Kids, of course, must be buckled into the appropriate child seats.)

What Don't I Need?

How Is a RoadRally Organized

SCCA rallies are organized under the everyday rules of the road and under the rules SCCA has established for road rallies. Weeks or even months before an event, a rallymaster or rally committee will create the rules for the event, establish a start and finish and a route for you to follow, and determine what you are to do while you’re following the route. On rally day, he, she, or they will ensure that all the SCCA rally requirements are met and that the event can be conducted safely.

Review preliminary information about a rally carefully. If after reviewing the material you have questions, contact the organizers. They can provide answers. If check-in/registration opens at, say, 10 a.m., arrive promptly at ten so you will have as much time as possible to fill out the required forms and review the information provided. Again, ask questions.

Make sure your vehicle is ready to rally. Road rallies don’t require a competition-prepared car, but a vehicle in good working order is essential. Fill the gas tank; check belts, hoses, and fluid levels; clean the windows, inspect the tires and lights. On the rally, you will have enough to keep you busy without wondering whether you’ll make it to the next gas station, or if your car will get you to the end.

What kind of vehicle do you need? You can rally in a minivan or an SUV, but the more sporting your transportation, the more fun you will have. Remember, too, that comfort is more important than horsepower. You will find yourself in your vehicle for an extended period. A comfortable cockpit makes teamwork and paying attention to the job at hand easier.

Have the equipment you will need. This includes pencils, pens, highlighters, notepaper, a clipboard, maps, map lights, whatever the event requires. However, don’t become a pack rat. Take along only what you need. Clean the junk out of your car, too. You will accumulate enough clutter as the rally progresses.

Stay on the rally route. The most common mistake new rally teams make is getting too wrapped up in the timekeeping or sign-hunting or question-answering aspects of an event. For your initial forays into rallying, focus on the route-following and the teamwork. This will get you to the end in a happy mood. And you’ll be surprised at how well you do.

Road Rally Rules: The official document for SCCA RoadRallying is the annual edition of Road Rally Rules (the RRRs). Expect paved Madison County, Ill., roads, easy-to-follow tulip diagrams for route instructions, and checkpoint locations identified by official mileages and arrival times. Timing will be in minutes and seconds, with checkpoint arrival times calculated to whole minutes. After the rally, stick around to enjoy conversation and hospitality at our finish location. Registration is open for An Afternoon Wasted in Tribute to Tom Lehrer, a simple course-following Gimmick (GTA) sign hunt inspired by the works of legendary satirical singer/songwriter Tom Lehrer, who passed away in July. Join us and enjoy a Sunday afternoon tour of Jefferson County’s rural roads while seeking to answer questions along the route based on the signs you see. Start: Mastodon State Historic Site, 1050 Charles J Becker Dr, Imperial, MO 63052. Size of the field: We are limiting the field to 20 teams. While each team must include a driver and navigator, your team is welcome to include as many participants as can safely be carried in the car (which is determined by the number of seat belts). About Mastodon State Historic Site: Mastodon State Historic Site is the location of the Kimmswick Bone Bed, where scientists discovered the first solid evidence of the coexistence of humans and the American mastodon in eastern North America. Visitors can enjoy learning about the discovery and prehistoric Missouri at the museum, which features an interpretive video, ancient artifacts and fossils, and a mastodon skeleton replica. The museum is open noon to 4 p.m. on November 23; entry is free for visitors 12 and under, and $4/person for ages 13 and up. About Tom Lehrer: Tom Lehrer (1928–2025) was an American singer/songwriter, satirist, and professor of mathematics and musical theatre. His work as a musician was primarily in the 1950s and 60s, commonly featuring dark, political or otherwise unexpected comedic lyrics set to a catchy tune. Lehrer’s most known song is perhaps 1959’s “The Elements,” which features all 102 then-known periodic elements set to the tune of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Major-General’s Song” from The Pirates of Penzance.
